Why do we still need medical illustrators? In spite of the wonders of image-capturing technology such as CT, MRI and video, there is still much that just cannot be seen with these technologies. For example, a surgical procedure cannot be videotaped if the surgeon's hands are in the way. Much of the visual field may be messy or irrelevant to the topic to be explained. Video images from a laparoscopic procedure, with such a limited field of view, may be disorienting. A series of still images may not be able to explain a transformation. A patient just may not be able to figure out what he is looking at. But, a skilled medical illustrator — with knowledge of normal anatomy, pathology, procedure, instrumentation, visualization skills, and pedagogy — will create a succinct visual representation of a precise concept. A good illustration conveys the idea in ways the text or raw data alone never could. ![]() Fred & Ginger |
